This newsletter highlights the exhibit, Those Shafter Women, curated by Tom Branan, Gayanne Enquist and Meg Linden. Articles include an in-depth illustrated history by Meg Linden of the mothers, daughters, and wives in the Shafter family whom contributed to Point Reyes Peninsula history or found other interesting niches in which to live out their lives. The stories begin with the six children of the dynasty founders, Mary Lousia Lovell and William Rufus Shafter and spans their female descendants from the beginning of the 19th century to the mid-20th century. A separate article also by Meg Linden explores the fascinating life of Emma Shafter Howard (1842-1916) who married one of the most powerful men in San Francisco.
Camping under the stars at Inverness, is an excerpt from Dewey Livingston’s upcoming book about Point Reyes and Tomales Bay. It tells of James McMillan Shafter’s attempts to establish the town of Inverness, inviting prospective buyers to camp on lots and his grand plans to develop the area.
