Description

A history of the area told through images and historical research co-written by two local historians, Dewey Livingston and Carola DeRooy, they explore the Point Reyes Peninsula’s diverse landscape and people living 60 miles north of San Francisco in coastal Marin County. The Point Reyes Peninsula has a rich history encompassing indigenous Native American settlements, visits by Sir Francis Drake and Spanish explorers, dramatic shipwrecks along its rugged coastline, Mexican rancheros, famous gold rush era dairy ranches, railroads, and one of the countries most spectacular lighthouses and maritime lore to go with it. The area’s biodiversity, natural beauty, recreational opportunities and cultural heritage led to most of the Peninsula becoming a national park in 1962.
